PRESENTATIONS UNDER
CONSIDERATION
TRAVELOGUE
"The
Canadian
Maritimes"
2
weeks of independent travel in Nova Scotia with a tour of Cape
Breton Island, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.
Includes visits to sites associated with Norwegian
servicemen being trained there during WWII. At the
German invasion of Norway in 1940, The King of Norway
commanded that all Norwegian vessels at sea sail to allied
ports, including Nova Scotia.

ADULT LEARNING
"The
life of Saint Olav"
Olav at Sticklestad
Olav
den
hellige, "Olav the holy". He starts as Olaf
Haraldsson and becomes Olaf II Haraldsson, King of Norway in
1015, dies at the battle of Sticklestad in 1030 and is
canonized in 1164.
My
connection to this story: I have walked part of
the battlefield of Sticklestad, visited Nidarosdomen, where
Saint Olav's body lies today and have been given special
access to Steinvikholmen, an island fortress on the Skatval
peninsula. A cousin of mine lives on the shore directly
across from the fortress. Saltøy, the island of my mother's
father's family back to the 1600's can be seen a short
distance from the fortress.
Steinvikholmen was the site of the first shrine of St. Olav
(a simple wood coffin containing St. Olav's body).
It remained there until it was returned to Nidaros
Cathedral in 1564.

ADULT LEARNING
"The
Historic Age of Antarctic Exploration".
From Adrien de Gerlache's expedition in 1897-1899 to
Ernest Shackleton–John Rowett Expedition in 1921-22, I hope
to cover the 25 year period at the end of the 19th century to
the early 1920s.
The period became the focus of an international effort
that resulted in intensive scientific and geographical
exploration with 16 major Antarctic expeditions by eight
different countries.
My study of Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott forms the
basis for the presentation, expanded to include the major
explorations in this period. While I am targeting a 60-90
minute presentation this may become 2 - 1-hour sessions.

America), written in Norwegian and English, was
published in Norway in Årbok Nr. XIX of Skatval
Historielag.
LANGUAGES:
A native English speaker, I have command of about
2,000-2,500 words of conversational Norwegian and
unfortunately only about 300-500 words of basic German
acquiring each language after the age of 60.
MEMBERSHIPS:
Multiple historical society, genealogy, and Norwegian heritage
organizations in the U.S. and Norway including:
• Trønderlag of America
• Sons of Norway
• Nordmanns Forbundet
• State, County, and Local historical
associations

PROFESSIONAL:
For what would
matter on this page, my career at a Fortune 1000
information technology company was in a variety of technical
and management positions in various corporate functions
including their U.S. education group.
Along that path for over 30 years, I gave presentations and
taught classes to small and medium sized groups in various
parts of the U.S. in venues as small as a meeting room and as
large as an auditorium.
I was responsible for curriculum development of courses
offered to that corporation's customers as well as curriculum
development and course delivery for 1,100 technical
individuals in the U.S. Some of my group's materials
were also used outside the U.S. primarily in Europe and Japan.

SNAPSHOT: I have
travelled to the Hawaiian Islands for over 20 years and stayed
on the island of Maui part of each year for over 10 years and
can provide a more unique perspective to the experience of being
on this beautiful island and offer 1 main travel presentation
and 1 learning presentation about Maui.
The
presentations are "refreshed"
each
year during my annual return to my favorite of the
islands.

"MAUI -
MORE THAN LEIS AND LUAUS" -
travelogue
*********************************************************************************************************************
Framework of the
presentation:
A "normal" travel
presentation usually recounts the traveler's sequential
experience as their journey progressed. This
presentation is an amalgam based on a decade of staying part
time on the island and by its nature focuses more on the
various experiences of the island. each in greater detail.
Includes parts of the island the "resort focused" or
shorter term visitor would often miss.
*FORMAT: 60 minute
Powerpoint with narration followed by Q&A.
As people take their seats, a 20 minute lead
in slideshow of flowers around the island with Hawaiian
music plays (OPTIONAL).

SNAPSHOT: I have
wandered around some interesting places in different parts of
the world.
With thousands of pictures, and many different experiences, I
could create a variety of travel presentations given time to
work on them. An example of possibilities could be a
variety of presentations on England/Scotland/Wales where every
year for 6 years (approximately 3 months total of independent
travel experience) I travelled there and yet have never done a
presentation about any of these journeys.
While my travel web site is terribly out of date
(I have more fun traveling than updating my web site), a
visit will also give you some ideas for possible travel
presentations.

"SAILING ALONG NORWAY'S COAST" -
travelogue
*FORMAT: 60 minute Powerpoint with narration
followed by Q&A.
********************************************************************************************************************
Framework of the
presentation:
We start with a few extra
days in Bergen and then sail northbound for one week from Bergen to Kirkenes near
the Russian border. We cross the Arctic Circle and experience
the "midnight sun" at its peak. We sail through some of the
most beautiful fjords in the world (Geirangerfjord being a
UNESCO World Heritage Site). Side excursions take us
through snow covered mountains with roads just opened for
travel in June as the snow was cleared, to inland glaciers, to
the northern most point in Europe and to meet the Sami (no
longer referred to as "Laplanders"), Includes
pictures taken at midnight with no flash.
June 3: We had transferred to a smaller Hutigruten®
ship to allow us to sail back to Svartisen where the Nord
Norge would not be able to travel.
Some of the most scenic
ocean travel in the world. More than just pretty pictures of
Norway's coast.
People also learn a little of the history of shipping along
Norway's coast from the earliest steam ships up to today's
modern fleet. This presentation has drawn as many as 125
people for a single session.

GERMANY
********************************************************************************************************************
"GERMANY -
GENGENBACH TO KALKRIESE"
Learning
presentation OR
travelogue
*********************************************************************************************************************
Framework of the
presentation:
Based on a month in Germany with
2 weeks in the southwest in Baden-Württemberg working on
genealogy/family history research. The second 2 weeks
was in the northwest in North Rhine-Westphalia, moving in
with a German family to help a family member improve her
English language skills. Each part of this trip
included going out into many different aspects of German
society experiencing museums, typical travel expeiences, and
also gaining unique insight into Germany provided by
relatives and others with whom we interracted.
The learning presentation
version uses the trip as a vehicle to explore German
history and society as the journey progresses.
The travel version is
the progression of this trip. In reality, the travel
version of this presentation contains way too much for a one
hour presentation, but scaled down to meet time constraints it
works for groups who would have an interest in the scale of
the entire trip. A shorter travel version concentrating
on Gengengach, the Black Forest and Baden-Württemberg is
available as ""GERMANY - WALKING THOUGH GENGENBACH / WANDERING
ALONG THE BLACK FOREST" (below).
FORMAT1: A SINGLE 60 minute Powerpoint
presentation followed by 10 minute Q&A.
FORMAT
1 is complete and ready for presentation.
FORMAT 2: T
WO SEPARATE 50 minute
Powerpoint presentations each followed by 10 minute
Q&A
FORMAT 2 would require extra time to
expand the presentation materials.
NOTE: Format 1
originally had 90 minutes of presentation materials before
it was scaled back to 60 minutes to meet an organizations
requirements.
Part 1 would
cover Baden-Württemberg and the Black Forest area
Part 2 would cover
North Rhine-Westphalia, and include the Roman Empire
attempting to conquer Magna Germania leading up to the
battlefield of Arminius and Varus of 9 AD in Lower Saxony.

Englegasse (Gengenbach) left.
Monument to Hermann (Arminius 9AD) below.
Learn about modern and historic Germany through a
month’s journey from the picturesque 13th century walled
village of Gengenbach on the edge of the Black Forest, to
North Rhine-Westphalia, and to the battlefield of Arminius and
Varus of 9 AD in Lower Saxony".
The basis
of the presentation comes from a little over a month in Germany
with 2 weeks of genealogy research and travel in the southwest
and over 2 weeks living on a farm with a family in the northwest
traveling each day to parts of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower
Saxony.

Staying for 2 weeks in the 13th century walled German village of
Gengenbach on the edge of the Black Forest, we travel through
this picturesque village and out into the Black Forest using
public transportation of trains and busses. A personally
guided trip through the Black Forest in a relative's BMW takes
us to other small villages, mountain lakes, through wine
country, and to a hill top castle for lunch. We gain some
unique perspective from relatives living in the area..

*********************************************************************************************************************
(Partially completed -
being worked on in conjunction with "Antwerp

Framework
of the presentation:
Based on 2 weeks
sailing on the Rhine, Main, and Danube from Amsterdam
travelling through The Netherlands, Germany, and finally
to Austria and our final destination - Vienna.
Many side trips into the European countryside with
visits to various cities and villiages. The
Netherlands, making chocolate in Belgium, visiting WWI
battlefields, the Cologne Cathedral, Heidelberg . . . . .the
list goes on. And yes, CASTLES EVERYWHERE along the
Rhine! And yet one of the most fantastic experiences was
simply being on this ship and gently moving through the
European country side. While this particular
trip did not include any time in Vienna, I stayed there for
most of a week in another year and could include Vienna as
part of this presentation.

Partially completed - being worked on in
conjunction with "The
Great Rivers of Europe - Sailing from Amsterdam to

Framework of
the presentation:
Based on 2 weeks sailing
on the Rhine and Mosel from Antwerp ultimately arriving in
Basel, Switzerland. We start with a tour of Antwerp
and continue on to keeping out the sea in The Netherlands,
old windmills in Kinderdijk (still being used), Bonn,
Luxembourg, dinner in Strasbourg at a restaurant next
to the canals,. . . . We even spend time in the Alsace
region of France and visit a stork refuge in Hunawihr.
See the framework
above for "Great Rivers" - this experience is similar in
nature but unique to its own journey.
Similar in
nature to "Great Rivers" but with different rivers and
destinations and extra days staying in and
exploring Lucerne and the surrounding area with a day trip
on Lake Lucerne returning by rail and bus later in the day
(left).
Also included a trip to a mountain summit looking out on the
Jungfrau, one of the main summits in the Bernese alps
Also includes time in Trier,
Germany; Luxembourg, Strasbourg, France, and several days in
Lucerne, Switzerland.

2011 was the 100th anniversary of Amundsen reaching the
South Pole in December of 1911. This presentation discusses the
journey of Amundsen's life and his polar
explorations. Amundsen was successful while Scott died on
his return journey from the South Pole. We discuss the
differences in their 2 approaches to reach the South Pole and
return. While this presentation can be shortened, an
alternative is my
"Amundsen
and Scott - Race to the The End" presentation which
focuses only on the South Pole expeditions of the two men.

Different than
"Roald
Amundsen - Polar Explorer", as it focuses only on the
South Pole Expeditions of Amundsen and Scott and compares those
2 expeditions.
Based on my presentation,
"Roald
Amundsen
- Polar Explorer", this presentation borrows part of
the title from Ross D. E. MacPHee's wonderful book - "Race to
The End (Amundsen, Scott, and the Attainment of the South
Pole)". MacPhee, Curator of the Antactic exhibition of the
American Museum of Natural History provides in his book much of
what, along with Amundsen's notes in his book "The South Pole",
I use for the framework of this presentation. After
estabishing a thumbnail sketch of each explorer and their
journeys to the Bay of Whales and Ross Island, respectively, my
talk covers the two expeditions which ultimately became a "race.

"NORWEGIANS IN HAWAII -
1881" - Learning presentation
Originally presented as "1881- Norwegians in Hawaii - Conflict
in Plantation Society" for the Norwegian America Historical
Association - Norway.
*********************************************************************************************************************
*ORIGINAL PRESENTATION
FORMAT: 20 minute PowerPoint with narration and 10
minute discussion. This was presented as an academic paper
but the presentation stands by itself and is appropriate for
groups wanting to learn more about this unique part of history.
The international conference where this was presented
placed strict limits on presentation time. In other venues this
presentation can be modified for longer sessions.
Framework of the
presentation:
On February 14, 2006, I
and 19 Norwegians from Drammen, Norway, joined others
standing at McGregor point overlooking Maalaea harbor
on the island of Maui. We were there for the traditional
Hawaiian blessing and rededication of a "bautastein"
(memorial stone) celebrating the arrival of Norwegians in
Hawaii 125 years earlier in 1881.
It was a starting point of hundreds of hours of research that
led to the creation of, and presentation of, a paper
discussing this unique part of Norwegian history.
In the
1880's, Hawaiian King David Kalakua approved recruiting of
plantation workers from Portugal, Germany,
and Scandinavia, commissioning a Norwegian sea Captain to
bring back 400 Scandinavians.
The results were, shall we say, were less than desired.
The paper I wrote and my associated presentation are
described below. There are hyperlinks to the actual
paper and its 2-page overview.

This presentation follows
the progression from the early steamers and Captain Richard
With, to today's modern fleet of ships. Similar to, but not the
same as, my travel presentations on Hurtigruten®. Includes
changes in technology, the impact of WWI and WWII and the
experience of traveling on a northbound journey along the coast
of Norway on one of today's ships, the Nord Norge.
The Nord Norge was the ship which rescued 100 passengers
and 54 crew of the MS Explorer when the Explorer capsized in
Antarctic waters after striking an iceberg. The Explorer
sank just 2 hours after the rescue by the Nord Norge.

"TRØNDELAG, NORWAY - IN
SEARCH OF NORWEGIAN HERITAGE"
-
travelogue
*********************************************************************************************************************
Framework of the
presentation:
Based on a Norwegian
genealogy/family history research trip to this part of
mid-Norway (North and South Trøndelag fylker (counties)
which includes Trøndheim. People on this custom
research tour also were able to visit locations that would
have been those experienced by their ancestors. Includes visits to historic sites, as well as
military installations and prisons connected to the WWII
German occupation of Norway.
Some of the pictures from that tour are available by <CLICKING
HERE>. Includes some history. Driving past the
island of part of my heritage from the 1600's, we visit the
location of the Battle of Sticklestad where in 1030 KIng Olaf
Haraldsson was killed. Canonized in 1888, today we know him as
St. Olaf [Saint Olav] (left).
Includes some sadness. We visit WWII German gun
implacements and a prison camp where to clean a courtyard of
fallen leaves the prisoners had to pick up the leaves with
their mouths and crawl to the opposite end of the courtyard
and deposit them - only to repeat the process taking the
leaves back to the other end of the courtyard.

written in Norwegian and English (the
English portion later translated by a native Norwegian speaking
translator) and published in Norway in Årbok Nr. XIX of Skatval

required to write this entire section in Norwegian with no help
from others using only my existing knowledge of the Norwegian
language without using other tools such as English/Norwegian
dictionaries, Google translate, etc. The goal was to allow the
Norwegian reader to see what could be accomplished by an
American attempting to learn Norwegian. Therefore, mistakes in
grammar and spelling were acceptable and intended to be left
unaltered as originally written.

JON
SATRUM - PROFILE AND BACKGROUND
(more on sidebar to the left <CLICK

*********************************************************************************************************************
PRESENTATIONS: When I retired, I was
asked to do occasional presentations on topics where I had a
fair amount of knowledge and I matched up with an audience who
would be interested.
Over and over
again, people would say. "I really enjoyed that, you
should look for other organizations who might like to have you
speak". Now,
from time to time, I offer to do additional
presentations hopefully for the enjoyment and benefit of those
who attend. I try to
limit myself to about 6 presentations each year, although I
often find organizations ask me to do "one more".
While I am able
to speak on a wide range of topics, the majority of
my presentations, articles, and speeches given over
the last 10 years have been focused on the country of
Norway, Norwegian heritage, and Norwegian culture.
Another focus is Hawaii, specifically the island of
Maui. Other presentations focus on various travel
destinations or topics of personal interest.
My
travel
presentations are generally more focused than most and in
greater detail than
your typical travel presentation. An example might be
travel in Austria where I spent 3 weeks of independent travel
only in Austria and then in only 5 cities or villages.
My stay in Vienna was for 5 days instead of just an
afternoon or an evening on the way to yet one more
destination. I started travelling to Hawaii 20 years ago
and specifically for Maui, I have been staying on the island
in the winter for 10 years. This type of travel
gives me a different insight than what might come from someone
who took a bus tour of Europe and then relates that experience
during a presentation.
NOTE:
I often first create a presentation for a specific club
or organization and then later make that presentation
available to others, modified to better match the audience.
New presentations can be created and partially
completed presentations above could be finalized given an
interest by your group and enough lead time to create a fun
an interesting talk. My criteria for creating a presentation is
usually based on my own personal interest where I think it
would be rewarding for me to learn more about a topic or
destination, the need of an organization for a presentation on
that topic, and the ability to use those materials more than
once. Sometimes I create a presentation with no specific
intent of sharing it with others simply because the process
results in my own personal learning.
*********************************************************************************************************************
ARTICLES: Articles I have written
since retirement have been primarily for Norwegian heritage
