About this journey

While we have been on cruises, they are not our preferred way of travel (although we do like river cruises).  Our Iceland journey was part of a once-a-year two week cruise through the North Atlantic with stops in locations not normally on many itineraries.

"GEOTHERMAL": One word that stuck in my head while we in Iceland was geothermal.  A natural resource in Iceland, it also affects the environment in which Icelanders live.  In the top picture a building in a geyser field gives you a sense of the naturally occuring source of power that helps fuel Iceland's economy providing not only heat, but low cost energy. So much energy is used in the production of aluminum that Iceland's low cost electricity makes it an effective location to smelt aluminum. 1/4 of the electricity produced in Iceland is used by the Aluminum industry. Iceland is the world's largest electricity producer per capita and  99.9% of that electricity is generated from renewables.
